Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Fire Service (OFS) mounted a robust response to 84 storm-related incidents across the state from May 16 to May 22, addressing the aftermath of intense Kalabaisakhi that caused widespread tree falls, road blockages, and structural damage.

According to an official press release, over the week, personnel from 56 fire stations were deployed to clear obstructions and ensure public safety, with no reported casualties due to their swift and coordinated efforts.

The operations saw the highest activity on May 16, with 34 incidents handled by 21 fire stations, reflecting the severity of the storms during the early phase of the Kalabaisakhi season. Other days saw varying levels of activity, with 19 incidents on May 17, six on May 18, five each on May 19 and 20, eight on May 21, and seven on May 22. Districts like Keonjhar, Balangir, Boudh, Nuapada, and Rairangpur were particularly hard-hit, with Keonjhar reporting incidents every day of the week.

The majority of incidents involved uprooted trees falling on roads, homes, boundary walls, and public buildings, including school campuses, collectorate compounds, and police premises. Fire service teams promptly cleared debris, restored accessibility, and stabilized damaged structures, ensuring minimal disruption. The OFS’s rapid response was critical in preventing injuries and maintaining safety across affected areas.

In response to the increasing frequency of pre-monsoon storms, the OFS has introduced several preparedness measures. These include enhanced coordination with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and local administrations for early warnings, pre-positioning response units in storm-prone areas, verifying equipment like chainsaws and safety kits, and conducting training refreshers for rapid clearance and structural rescue operations.

The OFS has urged the public to stay vigilant during storm alerts, avoid travel during active Kalabaisakhi spells, and refrain from taking shelter under trees or temporary structures. Citizens are encouraged to report tree falls, road blockages, or structural threats to the nearest fire station or district emergency control room promptly.

The Directorate of Odisha Fire Service commended the dedication of its personnel and reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and disaster resilience, calling for public cooperation in adhering to safety advisories.
