Bhubaneswar: In a major boost for lakhs of kendu leaf workers in Odisha, the state government on Monday approved a 25 per cent bonus for kendu leaf pluckers and a 5 per cent incentive amount for binders and seasonal staff associated with the trade.
The decision was approved by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi as part of the government’s welfare measures for kendu leaf workers. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), through a post on social media platform X, announced that the move aims to provide financial support to pluckers, binders and seasonal employees across the state.
Along with the bonus and incentive benefits, the state government has also increased the price of kendu leaves collected in processing areas. The price of ‘Kerry’ (a bundle containing 20 leaves) has been increased by 10 paise, while the rate of ‘Phal’ (40 leaves) has been enhanced by 20 paise.
According to the government decision, kendu leaf pluckers will receive a 25 per cent bonus, while binders and seasonal staff will be provided a 5 per cent incentive amount. The state government will spend a total of Rs 74.78 crore for implementing these measures.
Kendu leaf collection is a major livelihood source for rural and tribal communities in several districts of the state, with pluckers, binders and seasonal workers playing a crucial role in the entire process.
