Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Higher Education Department has directed all universities and higher education institutions across the state to observe Sanskrit Week (Sanskruta Saptaha) from August 25 to 31, 2026, with the objective of promoting and preserving the rich heritage of the Sanskrit language.

In a communication issued by the Director of Higher Education on Tuesday, Kaliprasanna Mohapatra, the Registrars of all universities and Principals of government and non-government-aided colleges have been asked to organise the week-long observance in an appropriate and meaningful manner.

The department has encouraged institutions to ensure the active participation of students, faculty members and other members of the academic community. A range of activities may be organised during the week, including Sanskrit-related competitions such as essay writing, debates, quizzes, recitation, elocution and translation.

Institutions have also been advised to display Sanskrit quotations, verses, greetings and messages at their entrances and other prominent locations as part of the ‘Sanskrit at the Entrance’ initiative.

Further, universities and colleges may organise exhibitions showcasing books, manuscripts, inscriptions, literary works, posters and charts highlighting the contribution of Sanskrit to Indian literature, philosophy, science and culture.

Wherever feasible, institutions may also conduct awareness rallies or processions to promote appreciation of the Sanskrit language. Screening of documentaries, educational videos, lectures and other audio-visual programmes related to the Sanskrit language, literature and culture has also been suggested.

The department has additionally encouraged institutions to organise lectures, seminars, workshops, cultural programmes and other suitable activities depending on their local context and available resources.

The Heads of Institutions have been asked to publicise the Sanskrit Week observance through notice boards, institutional websites and other communication channels. They have also been directed to maintain a brief record of the programmes conducted, along with photographs and other relevant details, for institutional records and future reference.

According to the department, the expenditure incurred in conducting the programmes will be borne by the respective institutions. The Higher Education Department has sought the cooperation and active participation of all higher education institutions in making the Sanskrit Week observance meaningful.
