Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has renamed the existing ‘Regional Directorate of Education’ to ‘Regional Directorate of School Education’ with immediate effect, the School & Mass Education Department announced in a notification issued on July 18, 2026.
As per the notification No. SME-FE-OES-0142-2026, the offices located in Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur and Brahmapur under the School & Mass Education Department will henceforth be known as ‘Regional Directorate of School Education’.
The department has also ordered that the post of ‘Regional Director of Education’ in these offices will now be designated as ‘Regional Director of School Education’. The government said the new nomenclature will be used in all government records, notifications, orders, rules, regulations, manuals, service records, correspondence and other official documents.
Clarifying that the renaming will not impact service matters, the notification stated that the change will not affect the existing powers, duties, responsibilities, jurisdiction, functions, service conditions, seniority, pay, allowances or any other terms and conditions applicable to the post.
It further said all references to ‘Regional Directorate of Education’ in any existing law, rule, regulation, notification, order, circular, guideline or instruction shall now be construed as references to ‘Regional Directorate of School Education’, unless the context otherwise requires.
The notification, issued by the Commissioner-cum-Secretary to Government, will come into force with immediate effect and has been ordered to be published in an extraordinary issue of the Odisha Gazette.
