Bhubaneswar: Jharsuguda emerged as the hottest place in the state, recording a scorching 41.4°C at 11:30 AM on Monday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data.

Going by the IMD data, the western and interior districts were the worst affected as temperatures rose sharply by mid-morning. Rourkela followed closely with 39.8°C, while Sambalpur recorded 39.2°C and Hirakud registered 38.6°C.

Other notable temperatures included Keonjhar at 37.6°C, Chandbali at 36.4°C, Balasore at 35.8°C and the state capital Bhubaneswar at 35.6°C.

Coastal areas remained comparatively milder, with Puri recording 32°C, Paradip 31.2°C, and Gopalpur 30.8°C at the same time.

The IMD has classified the prevailing weather under different heat categories — extreme heat above 40°C, severe heat between 38–40°C, and intense heat between 35–38°C. This early surge in temperatures has triggered concerns for public health, especially among children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

The IMD has issued a safety advisory asking people to stay well hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours from 11 am to 4 pm, wear light and loose clothing.
