Bhubaneswar: One person was killed while another sustained serious injuries after being hit by a speeding car near Dhobagadia Square on Soro-Kupari Road under Khaira police limits in Balasore district.
The deceased has been identified as Santosh Sahu of Kupari village, while the injured is Dilip Bhuyan from the same village. Dilip is undergoing treatment at Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital.
According to reports, two friends Santosh and Dilip were sitting on a scooter (OD 01BF 3178) and chatting by the roadside near Dhobagadia Chowk late on Sunday night when the speeding car coming from Khaira towards Kupari lost control and rammed into the scooter and its riders. The impact was so severe that the scooter was pushed into a nearby shop, causing extensive damage to the shop. After the accident, the car driver, identified as Lochan Raut, fled the spot.
Locals immediately gathered at the accident site and staged a protest by blocking the Sora-Kupari and Ranital-Kupari Roads with burning tyres, demanding justice.
Tension eased only after police reached the spot and assured the protesters that the accused would be arrested and strict legal action would be taken.
