Bhubaneswar: Panic gripped a crowded village fair in Deogaon under Kavisuryanagar police station limits in Ganjam’s Aska sub-division when one of the coaches of a popular “Minabazar” train swing ride suddenly broke down mid-operation, causing the structure to collapse and injure several thrill-seekers.
The accident occurred during peak hours as revellers, including families and youngsters, enjoyed the ride at the local mela (fair). Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as the swing — a miniature train-style attraction that moves in a circular or swinging motion — malfunctioned abruptly.
One coach reportedly detached or failed structurally while the ride was in full swing, leading to riders being thrown off or trapped in the wreckage.
At least four people sustained injuries in the mishap, some of them seriously. The victims were rushed to the nearby Kodala Community Health Centre for immediate medical attention. Those with severe injuries were later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for advanced treatment and specialised care.
No fatalities have been reported so far, but the condition of the seriously wounded remains under close observation. Upon receiving information about the incident, a team from Kavisuryanagar police station swiftly reached the spot and launched an on-site investigation. Preliminary findings point to a possible mechanical failure.
