Bhubaneswar: A poacher was arrested and hundreds of live and dead birds were seized during a raid on bird poaching in the deep sea near Kirtania in Balasore district.
The accused, Kali Charan Mandal of Baliapal, along with his associates, allegedly crossed the Subarnarekha river daily and entered the Bay of Bengal near Kirtania to poach birds.
Acting on reliable information, a forest team from the Udaypur forest section conducted raids in the sea and arrested him.
The team seized 297 live birds and 113 dead birds from the poachers. An engine boat used for poaching was also seized. Further investigation is underway to trace other associates involved in the poaching racket.
