Bhubaneswar: A poacher was arrested while his accomplice managed to escape during a confrontation with forest guards at Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary in Balasore district on Sunday night.
The apprehended poacher has been identified as Madha Singh, a resident of the Jampada area in the district.
According to reports, a four-member team of Forest Guards had been tracking the poachers since 3 pm on Sunday after receiving a tip-off. The team came upon the poachers in the Gudikhal area under Santaragadia Forest Beat late in the night, where the poachers launched a surprise attack with firearms.
In the ensuing scuffle, one of the poachers was taken into custody, while his accomplice managed to flee the scene. The forest guards seized a gun, a torch, a knife, ammunition, and two bags containing hunting equipment from the poachers. Tragically, a forest guard sustained serious injuries during the altercation.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
