Bhubaneswar: “Police must take all necessary measures to ensure the public feels safe,” Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said while reviewing the crime and law and order situation in Odisha at Lok Seva Bhawan today. Stressing that the government follows a zero-tolerance policy towards women’s safety, he directed police officers to remain in “action mode” and ensure regular monitoring at the senior level.
The Chief Minister instructed the Home Department to further strengthen police patrolling, particularly around schools and colleges, to safeguard students. He also called for effective traffic regulation and strict measures to curb brown sugar smuggling from neighbouring states.
Reviewing ongoing efforts to rescue missing persons, Majhi noted that 8,035 women and 3,306 girls were rescued in the past year. He announced the formation of a special police recruitment board to fill vacant posts in the department at the earliest.
It was informed in the meeting that Odisha’s overall law and order situation remains under control, with most crime categories showing a decline over the past year compared to the last 15 years. The CM expressed satisfaction with the police’s performance in tackling illegal arms trade, sand smuggling, and executing non-bailable warrants.
However, he emphasised that measures against drug trafficking and illegal ganja cultivation must be intensified and expanded.
The meeting was attended by CM’s advisor Prakash Mishra, Advocate General Pitambar Acharya, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Satyabrata Sahu, DGP Y.B. Khurania, CM’s Principal Secretary Saswat Mishra, and senior police officers.
