Bhubaneswar: Road connectivity between Odisha and the neighbouring Telugu states – Andhra Pradesh and Telangana – was snapped on Monday after Piligada Bridge was swept away following incessant rains in Malkangiri district during the last 48 hours.
Many areas of the district have been cut off from the rest of the country as extremely heavy rainfall continues to pound the district. Water is flowing above the bridges at several places in the district while water is flowing close to danger levels in the rivers in the region.
Hundreds of vehicles, including trucks transporting essential commodities, have been stranded on the roads as bridges are under water cutting off links between Koraput and Andhra Pradesh.
While the Piligada Bridge has been washed away a JCB machine, road roller and other vehicles used in construction at the site were seen floating in the riverside. Locals fear that the situation is likely to deteriorate as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of very heavy rains during the next 24 hours.
