Rourkela: In a significant step towards strengthening the safety and well-being of elderly residents, the Rourkela Police on Tuesday organised a Senior Citizen Identity Card Distribution Ceremony at the District Police Office (DPO).
At the event, as many as 562 senior citizens from different parts of the steel city were issued specially designed identity cards aimed at enabling quick identification and facilitating prompt assistance during emergencies. The initiative is also expected to improve coordination between the police and elderly residents.
Officials said the programme goes beyond mere identification. The police have reinforced the Senior Citizen Cell at the police station level to provide targeted support to elderly citizens. The cell will focus on spreading awareness about cyber safety, legal rights, and preventive measures against crime.
To ensure effective implementation at the grassroots level, 86 beat officers have been deployed across the city. These officers have been tasked with maintaining regular contact with senior citizens, addressing their concerns, and ensuring timely intervention when required.
The initiative underscores a proactive community policing approach by the Rourkela Police, aimed at building a safer and more inclusive environment where senior citizens feel secure, respected, and connected to law enforcement.
