Rourkela: In a significant breakthrough, police shot and arrested two accused in the sensational murder of Tofan Bindhani in the wee hours of Saturday.
The encounter took place in the Jhirpani police station area. The two injured accused are Chhunu Harippa and Sushant Nayak. Both sustained bullet injuries in their legs.
According to police sources, a raid was conducted after receiving specific information that the accused were hiding in the Jhirpani area. When the police team approached, the accused opened fire, discharging two rounds at the officers. Police retaliated in self-defence, resulting in both suspects being injured and subsequently arrested.
It is pertinent to mention that the murder occurred last Tuesday near Narayanapalli under Sector-7 police station limits. Bindhani was allegedly attacked and killed by a group of 15 to 20 youths. Following the incident, local residents staged a protest outside Sector-7 police station, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.
Rourkela Superintendent of Police (SP) Nitesh Wadhwani directed the formation of four special teams under the leadership of DSP Manoranjan Pradhan to fast-track the investigation.
During the operation, police recovered one pistol from the arrested accused. Raids are continuing in multiple locations to nab the remaining fugitives involved in the murder.
