Cuttack: A massive fire broke out at the fish market located at Press Chhak in Cuttack, completely destroying the entire market. The blaze also spread to the Bank of India branch located on the upper floor of the building on Sunday late night.

According to reports, the fire is reported to have started around 2 am. The presence of a colour (paint) godown inside the building caused the fire to spread rapidly, making it extremely difficult for fire tenders to control the flames. As many as 10 fire engines are currently engaged in firefighting operations. Despite their efforts, the fire is still not fully under control due to heavy smoke.

The Bank of India branchon the upper floor has also been severely affected, with fears of significant damage to bank documents, furniture, and other assets.  The bank reported to have suffered huge loss due to the fire mishap. The branch was completely charred in the blaze and several bundles of currency notes were completely destroyed.

According to initial estimates, cash worth Rs 50 to 60 lakh belonging to fish traders was burnt to ashes. The fire has ruined the livelihood of around 17 fish traders. Their shops, equipment, deep freezers, and other belongings have been reduced to ashes.

Dense smoke is still emanating from the building, making it challenging for firefighters to enter the premises. This incident has caused widespread panic and distress among the local business community, as many traders have lost their entire life savings and business capital in the fire.

Further details are awaited.
