Bhubaneswar: SAI International Education Group hosted the 18th National Chess Championship for the Visually Challenged, organised by the All-India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB) in collaboration with the Odisha Chess Association for Visually Challenged (OCAVC).
The tournament, supported by the Department of Sports and Youth Services, Government of Odisha, and ProChESTA, is being held from April 2 to April 6, 2025. The championship is a milestone achievement in fostering inclusivity in sport and enabling visually impaired players to demonstrate their strategic skills and intellectual abilities.
The competition is the epitome of resilience, grit, and excellence, which resonates with the spirit of SAI International which has always been at the forefront of holistic learning and self-improvement. The evening began with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp, symbolizing wisdom and enlightenment, as the audience anticipated an inspiring session ahead, following the SAI Choir.
The prestigious event brought together 54 skilled chess players (52 men and 2 women) from 15 states and union territories across India, who competed in a 9-round individual championship format.
Maharashtra led in participation with 11 players, while Odisha was represented by four talented players—Soundarya Kumar Pradhan, Subhendu Kumar Patra, Prachurya Kumar Pradhan, and Deepak Kumar Bhoi. The winners of this championship will earn the esteemed opportunity to compete in the international rounds in Serbia and Poland, further cementing their place on the global stage.
A felicitation ceremony was held today at the school premises, where the chief guest, Dr. C.B. Satpathy, scholar, spiritual thinker, author and humanitarian honoured the chess champions for their outstanding achievements.
Among the distinguished players recognized was Soundarya Kumar Pradhan from Odisha, who won Gold (Board 2) at the World Team Chess Championship for the Blind 2022 in Macedonia and, Team Gold and individual silver at the Asian Para Games – 2023 in China. He is also the General Secretary- Odisha Chess Association for the Visually Challenged.
Other players, included -IM SwayangsuSatyapragyan from Odisha, Administrator of PRO-CHESS-TA, Department of Sports & Youth Services, Govt of Odisha and 5 Times National-A Participant Representing Air India; KishanGangolli from Karnataka, who won Silver (Board 3) at the IBCA World Team Championship 2022 in Macedonia; Aryan B Joshi from Maharashtra, who secured a Silver Medal at the IBCA World Junior Chess Championship for the Blind and Visually Impaired 2022 in France; Darpan Inani from Gujarat, who clinched Individual Gold at the Asian Para Games 2023 in China;Prachurya Kumar Pradhan from Odisha, who earned Silver at the Asian Para Games 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia; and Swapanil S from Karnataka, who won Individual Silver at the Asian Para Games 2023 in China. Their remarkable contributions to chess were celebrated as an inspiration to aspiring players.
In his address, Dr. C.B. Satpathy, shared, ” It is a real inspiration to see the unshakeable will and intellectual acumen of these talented players. Chess is a game, but it is also a showcase of strategy, patience, and perseverance—attributes these champions have upheld in the face of adversity. This championship is a strong reminder that the greatest strength is in the mind and spirit. Thanks to SAI International Education Group, AICFB, and OCAVC for their initiative to promote inclusivity and give a chance for visually impaired players to excel. Let this go on to encourage and motivate generations to come.”

Soundarya Kumar Pradhan, General Secretary of the Odisha Chess Association for the Visually Challenged and multiple-time international medalist, said, “Chess is not just a game for us; it is a way of life. This championship is a stepping stone for players like us to compete on the world stage. I am grateful for platforms like these that recognize our abilities and push us forward.”
Swayangsu Satyapragyan, Administrator of ProChESTA shared, “It is inspiring to see such talent and dedication among visually challenged chess players. This championship is a testament to the power of determination and strategic thinking. I thank SAI International for supporting this initiative and giving these players the recognition, they deserve.” Aryan B Joshi, a Silver Medalist at the IBCA World Junior Chess Championship for the Blind and Visually Impaired 2022 (France), remarked, “Every move in chess is about foresight and resilience—just like life.
This championship proves that no limitation can hold back talent. The encouragement we receive here fuels our passion and motivates us to achieve greater heights.” The event concluded on a note of gratitude, with Kesha Ranjan Pradhan, Arbitrator of the Championship, delivering the Vote of Thanks.
