Sexagenarian Rides Tricycle 200+ Km From Nayagarh To Berhampur For Treatment, Gets Help At MKCG

Bhubaneswar: Determination has no age. That was proved by Shukadev Nahak, 65, who travelled all the way from Barsahi village under Sarankul police station in Nayagarh district to Berhampur MKCG Medical College and Hospital on a tricycle — with a fractured leg.

Unable to walk or even stand properly for years, Shukadev pedalled himself for days in search of better treatment. His grit caught the attention of hospital staff, nurses and volunteers at MKCG, who are now ensuring he gets proper care.

“Hope For Better Treatment Brought Me Here”, he said.

A retired Gram Rakshi, Shukadev has been facing financial hardship since 2022. He lives alone — his two daughters are married and his only son suffers from mental illness. Despite his condition, he decided to come to MKCG, one of the leading government health institute in South Odisha.

“I have been riding this tricycle for a long time. My leg has been broken for many years. I came here hoping doctors will treat me well,” Shukadev said.

He reached Berhampur alone, but did not have to struggle. With help from nurses, doctors and some volunteers, he was admitted and treatment has now begun.

Hospital authorities said Shukadev is currently undergoing treatment at MKCG. Special arrangements are being made to support his recovery.

“We are hopeful that with proper treatment, Shukadev will recover and return home healthy,” a hospital official said.

Volunteers at the hospital have also come forward to help with his daily needs during the treatment period.

Shukadev’s journey is being hailed as an inspiring example of courage in the face of age, disability and hardship.
