Bhubaneswar: Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and his wife admired the state’s art, handicrafts, and handlooms during their visit to Kalabhoomi, a crafts museum in Bhubaneswar.
As per the release issued from the CMO office, Singapore President Tharman kicked off his two-day visit to Odisha on Friday by visiting the crafts museum, Kalabhoomi, where Odisha Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati joined him.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also accompanied the President and his wife.
During their visit, the President’s wife spent four hours at Kalabhoomi from 7.30 pm to 11.30 pm. They also purchased a saree and made the payment using UPI, highlighting India’s simple and efficient digital payment system, which has gained worldwide recognition.
The President and his wife also attended a cultural programme. Besides, they were served traditional Odia cuisine, which the President described as extremely delicious.
President Shanmugaratnam praised Odisha’s rich art, handicrafts, and handlooms, as well as its spiritual consciousness and heritage. He also appreciated the Odissi dance, fusion performances and music performances, showcasing the state’s vibrant cultural heritage.
Taking to his X handle, Majhi said, “…the rich heritage, culture, and traditions of Odisha were showcased to Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who expressed his appreciation for the vibrant cultural display. We also explored potential areas for collaboration between Odisha and Singapore, particularly in business, culture, and sustainable development.”
Earlier, Majhi welcomed Singapore President Tharman and his wife to the capital city, marking the beginning of their significant visit to the state. Tharman’s State Visit to India, which started on January 14, aims to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Singapore-India diplomatic relations.
Majhi took to social media to express his delight at welcoming Tharman, saying, “I welcomed His Excellency the President of Singapore, Shri Tharman Shanmugaratnam to Odisha, the land of the Lord.”
During their visit, eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged between Odisha and various Singaporean entities, fostering collaboration in key sectors. This development is expected to strengthen the economic ties between the two nations.
