Bhubaneswar: A significant development has emerged in the investigation into the tragic self-immolation of a Fakir Mohan College student, Soumyashree Bisi, with the discovery of critical CCTV footage.
The CCTV footage, captured on July 12 at 10:44 AM, shows the victim pedalling her bicycle to a nearby petrol pump to procure petrol just a few hours before immolating herself.
According to sources, the footage was obtained from a CCTV camera installed along the route between FM College and Chandipur. It appears to confirm that the student deliberately bought petrol just before the incident.
Notably, Soumyashree, a second-year Integrated B.Ed student, had been reportedly upset by the college authorities’ response to her complaint against the accused HoD Samira Kumar Sahu. On July 12, she set herself on fire outside the principal’s chamber, sustaining over 95% burn injuries. She succumbed to her injuries on July 14 while undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.
The Crime Branch, which is probing the case, has not officially commented on the CCTV evidence.
Meanwhile, Crime Branch authorities are working to determine the verifying the authenticity of the CCTV footage.
Following the earlier arrests of HoD Samira Kumar Sahu and the college principal, the police have now apprehended two students in connection with the tragic case of Soumyashree’s self-immolation. With these latest arrests, the total number of individuals taken into custody has risen to four.
