Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain and high winds under the influence of Cyclone Arnab left its mark on the Shree Jagannath Temple on Wednesday.
The holy Patitapabana Bana atop the shrine developed a ‘Shunya Ganthi’ after getting torn in gusty winds. Hundreds of small flags tied by devotees to the Neelachakra as manasik offerings were also ripped off and fell on the Dadhinauti.
Puri has been experiencing continuous rain and strong winds since morning. The wind speed tore a portion of the Patitapabana Bana, resulting in the knot. Simultaneously, the small votive flags tied around the Neelachakra were blown away and were seen scattered on the upper spire.
According to tradition, a Shunya Ganthi on the Patitapabana Bana is seen as an auspicious sign and divine indication to ward off major disaster. Devotees linked the phenomenon to Lord Jagannath’s protection.
“Mahaprabhu will protect all. This Ganthi means Arnab will weaken and not cause big damage,” a devotee said. SJTA informed that Chunara servitors will climb the temple and replace the torn flag once weather improves.
