Bhubaneswar: Renowned playback singer Padma Bhushan Suman Kalyanpur, celebrated for her melodious voice in Hindi, Marathi, and Odia films, passed away at the age of 89.
Suman Kalyanpur began her cinematic journey with Marathi films like Shukrachi Chandni and Mangu (1954). She went on to sing in over 850 films across multiple languages, creating timeless classics in Hindi such as “Sharaabi Sharaabi Yeh Saawan Ka Mausam”, “Aajkal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche”, “Na Na Karte Pyaar”, “Na Tum Hamein Jaano”, and “Parbaton Ke Pedon Par”. Her popular duets with Mohammed Rafi remain evergreen.
The veteran singer also made a significant mark in Odia cinema. She lent her voice to memorable Odia films including Gapa Hele Bi Sata, Chilika Tire, and Samaya, winning the hearts of Odia listeners with her soulful renditions. With her passing, the Indian music industry, including the Odia film fraternity, has lost a versatile and gifted vocalist whose voice transcended linguistic boundaries and continues to echo through generations.
