Bhubaneswar: Two engineering students were killed and five others were critically injured after a SUV they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck on the outskirts of the capital city late Thursday night.
According to reports, the accident occurred on the Chandaka-Bhola Road when the SUV, carrying seven persons, slammed into an oncoming truck. The collision was so forceful that the front of the SUV was badly mangled, leaving several passengers including the engineering students trapped inside the mangled vehicle.
Local residents and passersby who were present at the scene immediately informed the police and fire services. Fire service personnel soon reached the accident site and carried out a challenging rescue operation, using gas cutters to free the trapped victims from the wreckage.
While two engineering students died on the spot, the other five occupants sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, where some are reported to be in critical condition.
Police investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
