Nayagarh: A teacher of Kanibali Upper Primary School in Kandhamal district was arrested on Tuesday following allegations of sexual assault by a Class VIII student, police said.
The accused, identified as Kunu Bhoi, was apprehended by a team from Gochhapada Police Station after a complaint was lodged by the minor girl’s family.
According to PP Subhrajit Biswal, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Phulbani, a case was registered after the student’s family alleged that the teacher had sexually assaulted her.
“Upon receiving the complaint, the IIC formed a team, and the accused was taken into custody. The matter is under investigation,” Biswal said.
The SDPO stated that the probe is being conducted under the supervision of Harisha B.C, who has directed officials to carry out a detailed investigation considering the gravity of the allegations.
The headmaster of the school said that on March 2, 2026, a group of girl students approached him during class hours and requested that the boys be sent out of the classroom. After the boys left, the girls reportedly informed him about the alleged inappropriate behaviour of the teacher.
The headmaster said he discussed the matter with the assistant teacher and members of the School Management Committee (SMC), following which the issue was reported. He added that another related allegation linked to an incident during a science fair is also part of the ongoing investigation.
Police said further action will be taken based on the findings of the probe.
