Baripada: Two police officials sustained critical injuries in an attack by a group of villagers over a land dispute at Belapala village under Badasahi police limits in Mayurbhanj district on Wednesday.

Betonati SDPO Sudarsan Da and Badasahi IIC Umashankar Nayak were injured in the attack. They were rushed to the Badasahi health centre and later shifted to PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada.

Tension erupted at Belapala village following a group clash in connection with a land dispute. Two people were injured in the clash. The villagers took to the street demanding action against the accused. They blocked the Betonati-Badasahi road throughout day. Police reached the spot and tried to pacify them.

The police team requested the protesters to lift the strike as the polling party vehicle is scheduled to pass the road to their respective destination.

Meanwhile, a group of villagers attacked the police tem in which SDPO Sudarsan Das and Badasahi IIC Umashankar Nayak suffered critical injuries. The SDPO sustained severe head injuries while the IIC suffered hand fracture.

They were admitted to PRM Medical College.

As tension gripped the village, police forces have been deployed to keep a watch on the situation.

Mayurbhanj SP S Sushree ordered an investigation into the attack on police officials.
