Jajpur: A shocking incident unfolded in Panikoili, Jajpur district, on Saturday afternoon when unidentified assailants opened fire during a daring robbery attempt outside a jewellery shop, leaving two dead.
The deceased have been identified as an electrician Nila Madhab Panda, who succumbed to a bullet wound in the stomach, and employee of the jewellery shop Sunil Ray, who sustained a gunshot to the thigh. The latter was initially hospitalized in critical condition but later died while being transported to Bhubaneswar for treatment.
According to reports, a group of assailants arrived on motorbikes and attempted to loot the jewellery shop located in the bustling Panikoili market. When faced with resistance, they opened fire. The brazen attack caused chaos in the area as locals tried to intervene, managing to apprehend two of the robbers, while at least two others fled the scene.
The crime scene was strewn with bullet casings and a pistol, drawing a large crowd and sparking panic in the market.
Jajpur Police swiftly arrived at the location, taking the two captured suspects into custody. Authorities have launched a manhunt to track down the remaining culprits and are investigating the details of the loot.
