Bhubaneswar: Utkal University and Sambalpur University are among four state-run universities that will be brought under an integrated CCTV-based surveillance system as the Odisha government rolls out a major campus security initiative aimed at curbing ragging and other criminal activities.

The first phase of the project will also cover Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar and Maa Manikeshwari University in Kalahandi. A total of 3,146 CCTV cameras will be installed across the four campuses to provide round-the-clock monitoring and enhance the safety and security of students, faculty and staff.

The surveillance network will comprise 1,608 bullet cameras, 1,514 dome cameras and 24 pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras capable of long-range monitoring and active surveillance of sensitive areas on the campuses.

Utkal University will get the highest number of cameras, with 910 bullet cameras, 716 dome cameras and 10 PTZ cameras. Sambalpur University will be equipped with 325 bullet cameras, 377 dome cameras and four PTZ cameras.

Similarly, Maa Manikeshwari University will have 243 bullet cameras, 346 dome cameras and seven PTZ cameras installed on its campus, while Rama Devi Women’s University will get 130 bullet cameras, 75 dome cameras and three PTZ cameras.

The state government has undertaken the project amid growing concerns over incidents of ragging, vandalism, theft, unauthorised entry and other forms of disruptive behaviour on university campuses.

The integrated surveillance system is expected to strengthen security management, improve emergency response and create a safer academic environment across the selected institutions.
