Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s para fencer V. Ramesh Rao has clinched gold for India in the Men’s Individual Foil category at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships held in Lagos, Nigeria.
Rao put up a dominant show throughout the tournament and emerged as the champion, adding another major international medal to India’s tally in para fencing.
The athlete hails from Chhatrapur in Ganjam district.
News of his victory was met with celebrations back home. Family members, neighbours and sports lovers in Chhatrapur celebrated on the milestone win.
Sports lovers said Rao’s performance is a big boost for Odisha and Indian para sports. His gold is being seen as a strong example for aspiring athletes across the state, proving that talent from Odisha can shine on the global stage.
