Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police’s Special Crime Unit arrested a West Bengal man and seized 263 gm of brown sugar from his possession during a raid near Haldipadia under Laxmisagar police station limits here on Monday.
The accused has been identified as Zakirul Islam, a resident of Shahbad village under Lalgola police station in Murshidabad district of West Bengal.
According to police, the Special Crime Unit conducted the operation as part of its ongoing drive against the illegal drug trade. During the raid, the cops seized 263 gm of brown sugar, a mobile phone and Rs 710 in cash from the accused.
Islam was subsequently arrested in connection with the seizure. Police are now probing the source of the contraband and whether the accused was involved in supplying the drug in Bhubaneswar.
The Special Crime Unit has intensified its crackdown on narcotics as part of the Commissionerate Police’s efforts to curb drug trafficking and make the city drug-free.
