Bhubaneswar: A 52-year-old woman died and her husband was critically injured when the wall of their house collapsed under the impact of a neighbouring wall that gave way during continuous rain in Mayurbhanj district late Monday night.
The deceased has been identified as Hemalata Mohanta. Her husband, Birabhadra Mohanta (52), is battling for life.
As per reports, the couple, residents of Badasahi under Badampahada police station limits, had gone to sleep after dinner. The wall of a neighbouring house collapsed and fell on their house wall around 3 pm. Both walls then came crashing down on Hemalata and her husband when they were asleep.
Upon being informed, rescue teams used a JCB machine to free them. The rescue team with the help of locals rushed them to Badampahada Community Health Centre. Doctors there declared Hemalata brought dead.
Birabhadra, who is in a critical condition, was shifted to Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital for further treatment. Badampahar police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation.
It is pertinent to mention that similar wall collapses are being reported from several places in the district following the heavy rain.
In a related incident on Monday in neighbouring Baleshwar district, a house wall collapsed in Kapasuda under Jaleswar block, killing a grandmother and her grandson. The granddaughter was also critically injured.
