Kataka: An unidentified woman was found dead on the banks of the Kathajodi river in Kataka city on Wednesday, with deep cut marks reportedly noticed on her neck, police said.
The body was spotted by local residents in the evening, following which personnel from Purighat and Badambadi police stations reached the spot and launched an investigation.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the SCB Medical College and Hospital for postmortem. Her identity is yet to be ascertained.
A mat, a cooking utensil and paper plates were also found near the body, police said. The circumstances have raised suspicion that the woman may have been murdered, though the possibility is yet to be established.
Police said the exact cause and circumstances of the death would be known after the postmortem examination and further investigation.
“We are examining the circumstances surrounding the death and making efforts to establish the identity of the deceased and determine whether the case is one of murder,” a police officer said.
