Binika (Subarnapur): In an extraordinary catch that has stirred both curiosity and celebration, local fishermen in Binika town of Subarnapur district hauled in a 100-kilogram Goonch catfish from the Mahanadi River on Thursday. The sheer size of the fish, coupled with its reputed medicinal value, drew large crowds and created a festive atmosphere in the riverside town.
The fish, known locally as Bodha, was netted from the deep waters of the Mahanadi near Binikapada. Measuring nearly six feet in length, the massive Goonch catfish required the efforts of three fishermen to bring it ashore.
Residents flocked to the spot upon hearing of the catch, eager to witness the rare aquatic marvel firsthand. Locals were particularly fascinated by the fish’s alleged therapeutic benefits, a belief widely held in the region. The fish was later displayed in the local market, where it was sold at ₹300 per kilogram, fetching considerable attention and brisk sales.
“This is the biggest Bodha fish we’ve ever caught,” said one of the fishermen. “Earlier, we had only managed to catch ones weighing 30 to 40 kilograms.”
