Three Gates Of Rengali Dam Opened As Water Level Rises In Brahmani

Angul: In response to the continuous rise in the Brahmani River’s water level due to heavy rainfall in upper catchment areas, the authorities at Rengali Dam in Kaniha block of Angul district, have opened three gates to release excess floodwater.

The first gate was opened earlier this week, followed by the second gate on the afternoon of July 24, and the third gate (Gate No. 11) was opened at 2:38 AM on July 25, according to officials at the Rengali Flood Control Room.

The full reservoir capacity of the Rengali Dam is 123.50 meters, but the prescribed safe level as per the dam’s water storage schedule is 114.05 meters. As of 4:00 PM today, the reservoir stood at 120.62 meters, significantly above the desired level, prompting the release of floodwater to prevent overflow and downstream flooding.

Currently, the dam is receiving an inflow of 4,856.43 cubic meters per second, while 4,001.51 cubic meters per second is being discharged through the three open gates and the power channel.

In addition to flood management, 216.80 megawatts of electricity are being generated per hour through hydropower operations, contributing to the region’s energy supply.

Authorities continue to monitor the inflow and outflow levels closely as rain persists in upstream areas. People living downstream have been advised to remain cautious, especially in low-lying regions along the Brahmani River.
