Odisha Hikes Law Commission Members’ Honorarium To Rs 1.2 Lakh

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Friday approved a revision in the remuneration structure of Non-Official Full-Time Members of the Odisha State Law Commission, raising their monthly honorarium from Rs 75,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh.

According to a press brief issued by the Law Department, the State government has amended Resolution No. 2412-LRC-01/2016-L dated March 16, 2016, to effect this change. As part of the revision, the term “salary” has been replaced with “honorarium” in line with the advisory and non-executive nature of the Commission.

The revised pay structure aims to better align compensation with the responsibilities and contributions of Commission members engaged in legal research, policy analysis, and law reform. The remuneration had remained largely unchanged for nearly a decade despite the expanding scope of work.

The government has clarified that retired members serving on the Commission will continue to receive the revised honorarium along with their pension and other retirement benefits. However, there will be no change in the existing provisions related to travel allowance and other admissible benefits, which will remain intact.

The revision is expected to strengthen the functioning of the Law Commission by ensuring adequate support for its members, who play a key role in advising the State government on legislative matters and legal reforms.

The amended provisions have been formally incorporated into the earlier resolution and will come into effect following the issuance of an official notification.
