Bhubaneswar: The death toll of Odia workers in the tragic ammonia gas leak tragedy at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu has climbed to 11, after a 16-year-old girl from Odisha succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment in a Chennai-based hospital.
The deceased has been identified as Sumitra Juang, daughter of Nilamani Juang of Pitanali village under Telkoi police limits in Keonjhar district. The Keonjhar District Labour Department has, meanwhile, confirmed her death on Friday.
According to sources, Sumitra cleared her Class X board exams with good marks but could not pursue Plus II due to financial constraints. She then left for Tamil Nadu to earn money so that she could continue her studies.
The deceased’s mother said her daughter had left home with dreams of earning enough to pay for college, but lost her life before she could fulfil those aspirations.
It is pertinent to mention that the tragic incident occurred on Sunday at private seafood processing and export unit in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu.
Reports said around 120 migrant workers from Odisha, Assam and Jharkhand were present at the factory when the mishap occurred.
