AIIMS Bhubaneswar Completes 100 Robotic Surgeries, Marks Milestone in Public Healthcare

Bhubaneswar: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing 100 advanced robotic-assisted surgeries, becoming the first government-funded healthcare institution in Odisha to establish a fully functional multi-disciplinary robotic surgical programme.

The achievement marks a major advancement in public healthcare in Odisha and eastern India by making advanced robotic-assisted surgeries accessible to economically weaker and middle-income patients at subsidised government rates.

According to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the robotic surgery programme has successfully handled complex cases across five major departments—General Surgery, Surgical Gastroenterology, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, besides specialised procedures such as robotic bariatric surgery and intricate paediatric surgeries.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director and CEO Dr. Ashutosh Biswas described the completion of 100 robotic surgeries as a landmark achievement reflecting the institute’s commitment to bringing next-generation healthcare to the people of Odisha.

“We have democratized access to the world’s most advanced surgical technology. We are pleased to lead the state into a new era of surgical precision and affordable excellence,” Dr. Biswas said.

Before the launch of the robotic surgery programme at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, patients requiring such advanced minimally invasive procedures had to travel to metropolitan cities such as Chennai, Hyderabad and New Delhi for treatment, often incurring substantial expenses. In contrast, similar procedures in private hospitals typically cost several lakhs of rupees.

The institute said the availability of robotic-assisted surgeries at government rates has significantly reduced the financial burden on patients while ensuring access to advanced surgical care within the state.

A special programme was organised at AIIMS Bhubaneswar to commemorate the milestone. The event was attended by Dean (Academic) Dr. Dillip Kumar Parida, Medical Superintendent Dr. Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy, OT Committee Chairman and Head of Paediatric Surgery Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohanty, Nodal Officer of the Robotic Surgery Programme and Head of Urology Dr. Prasant Nayak, Deputy Director (Administration) Lt. Col. Abhijit Sarkar, along with faculty members, nursing officers and staff.
