Sambalpur: The carcass of a female elephant was found in the Mundher Sankhapat jungle under the Jujumura Forest Range in Sambalpur district on Wednesday, coinciding with World Elephant Day.
The carcass was spotted in the forest, following which Forest Department officials and staff reached the spot and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the elephant’s death.
The exact cause of death remains unclear, officials said. Since the carcass is that of a female elephant, there is no immediate suspicion that the animal was hunted for its tusks.
The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) said the precise cause of death would be established after the post-mortem examination and receipt of the report. Further action will be taken based on the findings.
