Bhubaneswar: Utkal University on Wednesday conducted a large-scale health screening of around 400 girl students staying in Hostel 6 and Hostel 7, after several jaundice cases were reported on the campus.
A team of three healthcare providers carried out the screening, checking students’ blood pressure and examining them for symptoms of jaundice. Officials said 12 students have tested positive so far.
“A list of symptomatic student will be prepared. Blood samples will be collected for jaundice tests,” an official said.
The screening drive is part of preventive measures taken by the university to contain the spread of the disease and ensure early detection. The university has also ensured safe drinking water supply to the two girls’ hostels.
Vice-Chancellor Chandi Prasad Nanda said that water supply from the borewell has been stopped. Water tanks of all 12 hostels in the university have been cleaned with chlorination for safe use by the students.
No fresh jaundice cases have been reported since Tuesday. The two students who were hospitalised have been discharged, while students who tested positive are staying in hostels and taking medication.
