Bengal: Family Files FIR Against Abhishek Banerjee Over Health Camp Treatment

Kolkata: The family of a girl child, who had her arm amputated after receiving treatment at a ‘Sebaashray’ health camp, on Wednesday filed a written complaint with the Diamond Harbour Police District Superintendent against Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, organiser of the health camp.

The family approached the police demanding an investigation into the entire incident. An FIR has been filed against Abhishek Banerjee and several others for receiving wrong treatment at the health camp, leading to the amputation of the right arm of the girl child.

A few days ago, the state health department received a complaint from Malati Biswas, a resident of Maheshtala in South 24 Parganas district. The family had filed an FIR against Abhishek Banerjee on the charge of losing his leg due to wrong treatment at the same health camp.

The state Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee spoke directly to the family, and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also contacted them by phone. Now, another tragic outcome of the ‘Sebaashray’ health camp has come to light.

This time, the family of Kriti Manna, a resident of the Bishnupur police station area of South 24 Parganas district, alleged that her baby girl was suffering from a rare and complex blood vessel disease since birth. Her treatment started after birth.

She was treated in multiple hospitals in Kolkata and was also taken to Vellore for treatment. Treatment started under the supervision of doctors at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi from March 2024. However, money was one of the main obstacles in fighting the rare and difficult disease.

Therefore, the family approached Trinamool’s Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee in the hope of financial assistance for the child’s treatment. Instead of providing financial assistance to continue the treatment at AIIMS, they were assured that the child would be treated at the Sebaashray camp on the instructions of Abhishek Banerjee.

The family alleged that the harassment started after that. Despite repeated attempts to contact Shantanu Sen and Ayan Ghosh Dastidar, they also met with misbehaviour.

Later, the family met Abhishek Banerjee at a Sebaashray Camp and again appealed for financial help. The child was referred to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital without paying any attention to it.

Allegedly, the family took the child to Delhi and Bangalore after seeing the physical condition of the child deteriorating day by day. There, the doctors were forced to amputate the child’s right arm from the shoulder to save her life.

Despite repeated requests for financial assistance, there has been no response. Instead, the child’s hand had to be cut off due to a delay and wrong treatment at the health camp.

The family further alleges that Abhishek Banerjee, without permission, used the child’s photograph in advertisements in the newspaper ‘Nirab Biplob’, which publishes all the programmes of his Lok Sabha constituency.
