Patna: A tragic incident sent shockwaves across Bihar’s East Champaran district after the body of a female engineering student was found hanging inside her hostel room on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Rimi Kumari, a fifth-semester student at an engineering college located under the jurisdiction of the Mufassil police station area in Motihari.

According to preliminary information, the hostel room had reportedly remained locked from inside for a prolonged period, raising suspicion among college authorities and fellow students.

After repeated attempts to contact the student failed, members of the college administration forcibly opened the room and found Rimi Kumari hanging inside in an unconscious state.

She was immediately rushed to the Sadar Hospital by college authorities and staff members, where doctors declared her dead.

Following the incident, local police personnel along with a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) reached the college campus and sealed the hostel room for detailed investigation.

Police officials said that, prima facie, the case appeared to be one of suicide. However, the body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Investigators are currently collecting forensic evidence from the hostel room and examining all possible angles related to the incident.

Police said they were questioning hostel inmates, classmates and college staff members as part of the investigation to ascertain the circumstances that may have led to the incident.

The deceased student’s family, who reside in Muzaffarpur, has been informed about the incident. The news has reportedly left the family devastated.

Authorities stated that considering the seriousness of the matter, every aspect of the case was being examined carefully to determine whether any additional factors were involved in the incident.

The East Champaran Police are currently awaiting the arrival of the deceased student’s family members before proceeding with the post-mortem examination.

The autopsy will be conducted in the presence of the family members by a specially constituted board comprising three expert doctors.

As part of the investigation, viscera samples will also be preserved for forensic examination to help determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the death.

Police further said that investigators would scrutinise the call detail records (CDRs) of the deceased student as well as those of her family members in an effort to gather possible clues related to the incident and determine whether any external factors or personal issues may have contributed to the tragedy.

The incident has triggered concern among students and local residents, with police maintaining that the investigation is being conducted with utmost seriousness and sensitivity.
