Bhubaneswar: A major tragedy has struck the fishing community of West Bengal as nine bodies have been recovered from the missing trawler named ‘Maa Kali’, while six other fishermen remain missing and are feared dead.
The trawler, which set sail on July 2 from Shankarpur in Medinipur with 15 fishermen onboard for catching Hilsa fish, was located capsized near Rakhtachar island, approximately 16 km from Bakkhali. Rescue teams from the Indian Coast Guard, West Bengal Police, and Forest Department recovered nine dead bodies from the overturned vessel. The bodies have been sent to Kakdwip Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Six fishermen are still missing and feared dead. The incident has left the families of the missing fishermen devastated. Among those still untraceable are three brothers from Uluda village under Bhograi block in Odisha’s Balasore district. They have been identified as Rabindra Majhi, Jagannath Majhi, and Jayaram Majhi, sons of Madhusudan Majhi.
Search operations are continuing in the sea to trace the remaining missing fishermen. The news has triggered mourning and deep anxiety in the families of the victims, particularly in the coastal villages of West Bengal and Odisha’s Balasore district.
