Bhubaneswar: A well-marked low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal–North Odisha coasts is likely to intensify into a depression within the next 12 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
According to the latest update issued at 5:30 pm on August 16, the weather system persisted over the same region and is likely to move northwestwards while gradually gaining strength.
The IMD has forecast squally weather over the Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal, as well as along and off the coasts of West Bengal, adjoining Bangladesh, Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh, from August 16 to 18.
Wind speeds are expected to reach 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, during this period. Sea conditions are also likely to remain rough to very rough, posing a risk to fishing and other maritime activities.
In view of the adverse weather conditions, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal or along and off the coasts of West Bengal, adjoining Bangladesh, Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh from August 16 to 18.
