Berhampur: The Berhampur railway station in southern Odisha is set for a major transformation, with authorities announcing a comprehensive redevelopment project worth around ₹300 crore aimed at significantly boosting capacity and passenger convenience.
Handling more than 162 trains and approximately 25,000 passengers daily, the station will undergo a substantial expansion under the plan. According to officials from the East Coast Railway, the project includes the addition of three new railway lines and four platforms, enabling smoother handling of originating, terminating, and through trains.
As part of the overhaul, a new station building will be constructed on the second entry side, alongside extensive yard reconfiguration. The relocation of service buildings and railway quarters has also been planned to create space for a more passenger-friendly station layout.
A key feature of the redevelopment is an integrated passenger movement system designed to streamline connectivity across platforms and both sides of the station. An elevated structure will facilitate uninterrupted movement, replacing conventional transit arrangements.
To further improve accessibility, the existing foot overbridge will be extended, ensuring better circulation within the station premises.
The upgraded station will incorporate inclusive infrastructure such as tactile pathways, level access systems, and facilities for persons with disabilities, promoting barrier-free movement.
In addition, modern amenities including a Quick Watering System, CCTV surveillance, access control mechanisms, baggage scanners, real-time passenger information systems, and upgraded electrical and signalling infrastructure will be installed as part of the project.
