Jayapur (Koraput): The Department of Agriculture of the Central University of Odisha, in collaboration with Brown Valley Estates, Koraput, organised a one-day workshop titled “The Coffee Journey” at its Sunabeda campus on Tuesday.
The workshop focused on various aspects of coffee, including cultivation, processing, roasting, brewing, value addition, marketing and emerging market opportunities. Dr Manjushree Singh, Head of the Department of Agriculture, said the programme was particularly relevant for students of Agriculture, Forestry and Business Management.
“From seed to cup, coffee passes through many stages involving production, processing, economics, marketing and branding. Students need to understand the entire value chain of coffee and its economic sustainability,” she said.
Nick Reid, SCA-certified professional barista, coffee technician and roaster, joined the workshop as mentor. He provided a detailed overview of the history of coffee, cultivation and production practices, various processing methods, roasting techniques and brewing. He also highlighted the coffee value chain and the opportunities available in the growing coffee sector. Reid noted that there is significant scope for research and development in the coffee market in India, particularly in Odisha.
Vice-Chancellor Professor (Dr) Ajit Kumar Sasani underlined the potential of developing Koraput as a major coffee-producing region. “Koraput produces high-quality coffee and the climate here is conducive for coffee cultivation,” he said.
Sujay Kumar Pradhan, Founder of Brown Valley Coffee Estate, Koraput, along with faculty members, researchers and students of the university, participated in the workshop.
