Baripada: An 11-year-old Class 5 student died after a coconut fell from a tree and struck him on the head in the Madhuban area of Baripada town in Mayurbhanj district, police said.
According to available information, relief materials were being distributed at Madhuban School in the Madhuban Talsahi area on Tuesday. The boy had gone to the school to collect relief materials and was returning home when a coconut reportedly fell from a nearby tree and hit him on the head.
After reaching home, the boy informed his father that he was experiencing pain in his head. As the pain intensified on Wednesday morning, his family members rushed him to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital at around 9 am.
However, the boy died about two hours later while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Following information about the incident, police reached the hospital, registered a case of unnatural death and conducted a post-mortem examination. The body was subsequently handed over to the family.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the Madhuban area.
