Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic circulation persisting over south coastal Odisha and adjoining north coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to trigger widespread rainfall across the state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
The system, located at about 3.1 km above mean sea level, is influencing weather conditions over eastern India and is expected to support the active progression of the monsoon in the coming days.
According to the IMD’s midday weather bulletin, the southwest monsoon is also likely to advance further into several parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and parts of southern Chhattisgarh over the next four to five days, as conditions remain favourable.
The IMD forecast light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at many places across all 30 districts of Odisha on June 16, 2026.
Districts expected to be affected include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh. Rain is also likely at isolated places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
The weather agency has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds for several parts of the state. A yellow warning has also been issued for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds, along with hot and humid conditions expected in some areas, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh.
The IMD has advised residents to remain alert, particularly in districts likely to experience thunderstorm activity and gusty winds.
