Baripada: Forest officials have arrested four poachers for attempting to hunt in the Similipal Wildlife Sanctuary. The arrests were made possible by AI-enabled cameras and Infrared Trap Cameras installed across the Similipal South Wildlife Division.
They are Sunil Bhakta, Sahadev Malik, Ramchandra Hansda, and Dhirendra Malik,
On March 5, 2026, at 9:40 PM, the AI camera under Dukura Wildlife Range detected three poachers carrying guns and moving inside the core area of the sanctuary. The Range Officer swiftly alerted field staff, leading to the apprehension of the accused.
Two handmade guns were seized from the poachers, with barrel lengths of 92.5cm and 106cm, respectively. The accused have been charged under various sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, including prohibition of hunting, restriction on entry in sanctuary, and destruction of wildlife.
The poachers will face penalties under Sections 9, 27, 29, 30, 31, 32, 39, and 52 of the Act, with punishments under Section 51(1) amended up to 2022. Further investigation is underway.
