Jaleswar (Balasore): In a story that transcends age, hardship, and social barriers, two elderly individuals living on the margins of society found companionship and dignity in each other, culminating in a simple yet deeply moving marriage in Balasore district.
Seventy-year-old Chaitanya Soren, who had been battling leprosy and living as a destitute after leaving his home in Hatigada under Jaleswar block, tied the knot with 65-year-old Champa Soren, a similarly vulnerable woman from the Raibania area. Their journey from strangers to life partners began at the Jaleswar railway station, where both survived by begging.
Amid the daily struggle for survival, conversations between the two gradually turned into emotional support and companionship. Over time, their bond deepened into a relationship rooted in mutual care and understanding—eventually leading them to decide to spend the rest of their lives together.
Their union was solemnised with community support at the Siddheshwar Mahadev Temple, where locals gathered in large numbers to witness the rare and heartwarming ceremony. The wedding, organised by the Bhola Bhandari voluntary organization, was marked by festive music, dancing, and even a modest procession—lending the occasion a celebratory spirit rarely associated with lives shaped by deprivation.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as both emotional and inspiring, as the elderly couple, often overlooked by society, became the centre of attention and goodwill. For many, the ceremony stood as a reminder that human connection and the desire for companionship endure regardless of age or circumstance.
Speaking after the ceremony, both Chaitanya and Champa expressed happiness and contentment, saying they looked forward to sharing whatever life brings—together.
