Bhubaneswar: Heatwave conditions are likely to continue across Odisha for the next four to five days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned.
According to IMD forecast, western districts such as Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Balangir are expected to record maximum temperatures between 43°C and 45°C, accompanied by dry north-westerly winds. The severe heat is likely to persist till May 28.
On Sunday, as many as 20 places across Odisha recorded temperatures above 40°C. Western Odisha remained the hottest with six locations crossing the 45°C mark. Titlagarh was the hottest place in the state at 45.8°C, followed by Boudh (45.6°C), Bhawanipatna (45.4°C), Sambalpur (45.3°C), Sonepur (45.2°C) and Balangir (45°C). Jharsuguda recorded 44.8°C, while Hirakud and Nuapada crossed 44°C.
Coastal areas including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri recorded temperatures below 40°C, but residents are facing extreme discomfort due to high moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal. This has significantly increased the “real feel” temperature, making it feel like 45–50°C in many places. Besides, Night temperatures are also remaining high, providing little relief from the oppressive heat.
Meanwhile, the IMD has advised people to avoid going outdoors during peak hours (11 am to 4 pm), stay hydrated, and take all necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
