Bhubaneswar: While police are not known for cracking murder mysteries, they have once again shown that they still have humanity inside. In a heart-rending incident from Lokanathpur village under Basta Police Station in Balasore district, police personnel performed the last rites of an elderly woman after her own sons left her body unattended for nearly 10 hours due to a bitter family dispute.
The deceased, identified as Tulasi Das, passed away on Tuesday morning at around 10 am. Soon after her death, a bitter quarrel erupted between her middle and younger sons over who would perform the final rites. As the disagreement escalated, no family member came forward to take responsibility.
The elderly woman’s body reportedly remained on the veranda of the house from 10 am till nearly 9 pm, sparking anger and concern among local residents.
On receiving information in the evening, police personnel from Amarda Road Outpost reached the spot. Finding that none of the family members were willing to claim the body or conduct the cremation, the police themselves arranged for the last rites and performed the funeral rituals with dignity.
It is learnt that Tulasi had three sons. After her eldest son had gone missing, she started residing with her younger son in the village.
