Bhubaneswar: Several parts of Odisha recorded heavy rainfall on Saturday due to a well-marked low pressure over the Bay of Bengal, with Koraput recording the highest downpour in the state.
According to IMD data, Koraput received 69.2 mm of rain, followed by Balangir with 67 mm. Other districts that recorded significant rainfall include Sonepur 52 mm, Bhadrak 40.2 mm, Bhubaneswar 45.6 mm and Cuttack 32.4 mm.
Dhenkanal and Khordha received 41 mm rainfall each in the last 12 hours. The heavy rain has led to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupted normal life in several places.
With the system intensifying, the India Meteorological Department has issued a Red Warning for Sunday, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places over Bargarh, Sambalpur and Nuapada districts.
An Orange Warning has been issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Sonepur, Bolangir and Kalahandi, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at one or two places.
A Yellow Warning has been issued for Balasore, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri, where heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places.
The State Emergency Operation Centre is on round-the-clock alert and district administrations have been asked to remain prepared for any eventuality. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and people in vulnerable and low-lying areas have been urged to stay alert and follow local administration advisories.
