Koraput: A 40-year-old woman was swept away by a sudden surge in a river while bathing in Koraput district on Saturday, police said.
The incident occurred at Donga Pai village under Tentulipadar Panchayat in Narayanpatna block. The deceased has been identified as Sina Bingdika.
According to reports, Bingdika had gone to the river for a bath when heavy rainfall in the upper catchment area triggered a sudden rise in the water level. She was caught in the strong current and swept away before she could reach safety.
Local women who witnessed the incident immediately alerted villagers, following which the Fire and Emergency Services personnel were informed. Rescue teams rushed to the spot and launched a search operation. After a prolonged effort, they recovered the woman’s body from the river.
Police have registered a case at the Narayanpatna police station. The body was sent for post-mortem examination and later handed over to the bereaved family.
The incident has left the village in mourning.
